The Academic Associates program is a clinical research assistant program for premedical students in the Emergency Department of St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. The primary responsibility of Academic Associates is to assist the department in ongoing research projects in an effort to bring greater precision to emergency medicine and improve the quality of care.

Academic Associates gain extensive experience conducting hands-on clinical research while being exposed to medical practice in an urban emergency department. The program also includes many other benefits:

  • One-on-one shadowing with residents
  • Access to trauma and resuscitation rooms
  • Focused talks and demonstrations, including medical techniques such as suturing, casting, and ultrasound
  • Opportunities to observe EMT and paramedic teams in the field
  • Opportunities to submit research proposals for future studies conducted in the emergency department of the Hospital Center
